Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush

This is the upgrade. If the Safari slicker we carry is the Honda Civic of slicker brushes (reliable, gets the job done, no complaints), the Chris Christensen Big G is the Lexus. Same job, completely different experience.

We use both. The Safari lives in the quick-grooming basket by the back door for fast detangling sessions. The Big G comes out for proper grooming days when we are working through the full coat. The difference is immediately obvious the first time you use it.

What Makes It Worth Four Times the Price

• Pin density. The Big G has 30% more pins than standard slickers. More pins means each individual pin does less work, which means less pulling, less snagging, and less discomfort for the dog. When you drag a cheap slicker through a tangle, it grabs and yanks. The Big G separates the hairs gradually because there are simply more pins sharing the load.
• Pin quality. The pins are stainless steel, hand-set, and individually polished. They do not have the rough tips that cheap slickers develop after a few uses. Your dog will not flinch. Ours lean into it.
• Pad tension. The cushioned pad has a specific firmness that lets the pins reach through the topcoat into the undercoat without pressing too hard against the skin. It flexes with body contours instead of fighting them. This matters enormously on a Golden, where you are brushing over ribs, hip bones, and joints.

When the Big G Earns Its Money

• Seasonal coat blows. Spring and fall, when your Golden is dropping undercoat like it is getting paid for it. The Big G pulls through dense, shedding coat more efficiently than the Safari. A 20-minute session with the Safari becomes a 12-minute session with the Big G. Multiply that by daily sessions for two to three weeks and the time savings add up.
• Mat prevention in feathering. The ears, chest, leg feathering, and tail: the places Goldens mat first. The Big G works through these areas with less pulling, which means your dog tolerates longer grooming sessions in sensitive areas.
• Show prep or photo days. If you want the coat to look its absolute best (fluffy, separated, no tangles), this is the tool that gets you there.

Do You Need This If You Already Have the Safari?

Honestly? No. The Safari slicker works fine. Your dog will be well-groomed with just the Safari and the pin brush. The Big G is a luxury upgrade that makes grooming faster, easier on the dog, and produces a better-looking result. If grooming is a battle in your house because your dog hates being brushed, the Big G might change that. Dogs that flinch from cheap slickers often relax under the Big G because it simply does not pull the same way.

If you groom three to four times a week (which you should with a Golden), you will use this tool hundreds of times. At roughly $70-100 depending on size, that is pennies per use over years of ownership. But if budget is tight, the Safari at $15 gets the job done. We carry both because they serve different needs and different budgets.

Which Size

• Medium: Good for face, ears, and leg feathering detail work
• Large: Better for full-body grooming on a Golden Retriever, covers more area per stroke

If you are only buying one, get the Large. It handles everything a Golden needs. The Medium is a nice-to-have for precision work around the face and ears, but the Large can do those areas too with a gentler touch.
